Making Houston Home, One Small Moment at a Time

It’s been a few months since we made the move from Toronto, and I won’t pretend it’s all been seamless. There’s a version of moving to a new city that looks like an adventure montage, exploring neighbourhoods, finding your favourite coffee spot, falling into a new routine with ease. And then there’s the real version, which is a little slower and a lot more ordinary than that.

But ordinary, I’m learning, is where home actually starts to happen.

There have been small moments lately that have caught me off guard in the best way. Finding a grocery store we actually like and knowing exactly where everything is. Having a go-to order at the café down the street. Recognising the same faces on our evening walks. None of it sounds dramatic, but that’s kind of the point. It’s the quiet, unremarkable things that start to make a place feel like yours.

Houston is still surprising me. I didn’t expect to love the green spaces as much as I do. There are more parks and trails here than I anticipated, and they’ve become a real part of how I decompress at the end of the week. I also didn’t expect how much the food scene would win me over. Toronto has incredible food, so I came in with high expectations, and Houston has genuinely held its own.

There are still things I miss about home. I’d be leaving something out if I didn’t say that. But I think you can miss one place and be grateful for another at the same time. That’s where I am right now, somewhere in between, figuring it out, and noticing all the little things that are slowly adding up to something that feels like ours.

If you’re in the middle of a big move or transition right now, I hope this is a small reminder that it doesn’t have to feel settled all at once. Sometimes it just takes a few unremarkable Tuesdays before a place starts to feel real.
