Mexico City: What I Didn’t Expect and Why I’m Already Planning to Go Back

I went to Mexico City back in November not entirely sure what to expect, and I came back genuinely surprised by how much I loved it. It’s one of those cities that gets under your skin in the best way, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since.

The food was the first thing that won me over, and I want to be specific here because Mexico City food deserves specifics. The seafood especially stood out, ceviches, tostadas, grilled fish, all of it fresh and incredibly well done. If you’re a seafood person this city will not disappoint you. The tacos also lived up to every expectation, which feels like an obvious thing to say but it genuinely needs to be said. I will say the coffee and pastries were not quite what I was hoping for, so if that’s your thing just know it’s not really where the city shines. Save your appetite for everything else.

The cocktails though. I don’t say this lightly but Mexico City might have the best cocktails I’ve ever had. I’ve genuinely struggled to order one back home since because nothing quite compares. If you go, do not skip the cocktails.

The city itself is beautiful and so much greener than I expected. La Condesa in particular stood out, tree lined streets, parks everywhere, the kind of neighbourhood you could spend a whole afternoon just wandering through. It’s the sort of place that makes you slow down without even trying.

One of the highlights of the trip was a walking tour of the historic district through Guru Walk, which I’d highly recommend to anyone visiting for the first time. It’s a great way to learn the history of the city and see parts of it you might not have found on your own. Here’s the link to the specific tour we did if you want to check it out.

Mexico City is also incredibly walkable which made exploring feel easy and spontaneous. We stumbled into an arts market where I found a beautiful watch from two local artists, the kind of thing you can’t find anywhere else and that makes a trip feel complete. I also picked up a really unique pot from a little shop that I’ll link here once I track down the name, it’s worth knowing about.

If you’ve been on the fence about Mexico City, I hope this is the nudge you needed. It’s colourful, warm, walkable, and full of food and drinks that set a standard you won’t forget. I’m already thinking about when I can go back. If you want to dig deeper into what the city has to offer I’ll be putting together dedicated guides on the best restaurants, the best cocktail bars, and the best shops worth visiting, so stay tuned for those.
