A few years ago I read Every Summer After by Carley Fortune and it gave me real nostalgia, as a kid I used to travel to Barry’s Bay with my family, the same lake town the book is set in. So when Every Year After, the Prime Video adaptation, dropped this past weekend I binged the whole thing over one weekend without much effort at all!
The series follows Percy and Sam, told over six years and one week in Barry’s Bay, navigating a lifelong friendship and the question of what if your first love was meant to be. It’s just as romantic and nostalgic as the book, and watching it brought all those same feelings right back. Seeing it on screen, the lake, the cottages, that very specific small town summer feeling, took me right back to those childhood trips.
As a Canadian I always love seeing Canadian authors represented and doing well, and seeing Carley Fortune’s book turned into a full series feels like a genuinely good moment for that! If you loved the book or even if you haven’t read it, it’s an easy watch and a perfect one for this time of year.
You can stream Every Year After now on Prime Video, all eight episodes are out so it’s fully binge ready.
If you haven’t read the book yet, you can find Every Summer After by Carley Fortune on Amazon or support an independent bookstore through Bookshop.org. Highly recommend reading it before or after watching, either way works.
