Visiting an oyster farm wasn’t something I had planned for the Portland trip, but it ended up being one of those experiences you don’t see coming and can’t stop talking about after. If you’re heading to Maine and looking for something a little different, this is worth adding to your list.
Glidden Point Oyster Farm is located in Edgecomb, Maine, just under an hour outside Portland, and the drive alone starts to feel like part of the experience. When you arrive you’re surrounded by tall pine trees and that quiet, earthy feeling that Maine does so well. As you walk closer to the water you get your first glimpse of the Damariscotta River and the farm stretching out ahead of you, and it’s genuinely beautiful.
The tour begins with a lesson on the history of the area, covering the Damariscotta River, the oyster farming tradition in the region and what makes this particular stretch of water so well suited to it. It’s the kind of context that makes everything that follows feel more meaningful. From there you walk down toward the water where you’re shown the equipment and the farming process up close, watching a working farm in action rather than just hearing about it. By the time you reach the water’s edge where the sorting and final processing happens, you have a real appreciation for how much goes into getting an oyster from the river to your plate.

Then comes the shucking lesson, which is where things get fun! It is not as easy as it looks, not even close. The technique takes a minute to figure out and there’s a very specific way to get the knife in, but once you find your rhythm it starts to click and by the end you genuinely feel like you’ve learned something new. There’s something really satisfying about shucking your own oyster and eating it right there by the water!

After the tour you have the option to purchase additional oysters and enjoy them at your own pace in that beautiful setting, which we absolutely did. They also have a small merch store with hats, t-shirts and sweatshirts, and I came home with a t-shirt I’ve already worn more times than I’d like to admit!
If you’re visiting Maine and want an experience that feels local, unhurried and genuinely special, Glidden Point is not one to miss. It’s the kind of afternoon that stays with you long after you’ve left and honestly one of the best things we did on the whole trip!

If you’re planning a trip to Maine I also put together a carry on packing guide for the long weekend that might be worth saving.
